Hey, mid-40s are nothin. I was 60 when I got my Savage. Also my first bike.
Put Metzlers on it right away. They're a huge improvement in handling and feel--the standard tires feel squiggly while the Metzlers are rock-solid. You'll be a better rider and enjoy the bike much more.
